The Mercedes Tigers are a team to watch the rest of this season – both the boys and girls. It could be a special year in orange land this season
Both teams took victories over perennial District 32-5A power Brownsville Veterans on the road on Tuesday. The boys rolled to a convincing 20-point win, 71-51 while the Lady Tigers beat the Chargers for the second time 47-28 and remain undefeated atop the district.
Jared Castaneda took the turn this time in the Tigers versatile offense. The point guard scored 21 points while teammate Brandon Lozoya added 17.
Coach Rick Trevino said earlier in the year as he was looking for the right combination that he knew that anyone could step up and score for the Tigers and he’s been right. Caleb Arthur, Jordan Ovalle, Castaneda and Lozoya are four of the players who have been atop the scorer’s list thus far for Mercedes.
The Tigers improved to 6-2 in the district, one game behind the Chargers at 7-1.
Tuesday’s game was pretty much the Tigers’ all the way, leading by 11 after the first quarter and 14 at the half, 36-22. Castaneda and Lozoya scored 15 of the team’s 18 second-quarter points.
Brownsville Veterans closed to within six at one point in the third quarter but then Mercedes went on a 13-4 run to put the Chargers down for the first time in district this season.
For the girls, Sellie Gonzalez and Mallory Noriega combined for 29 points, scoring 15 and 14 respectively, as the Lady Tigers rolled to a 47-28 victory, keeping their perfect record in District 32-5A intact.
