Tigers offense taking new life
Football practice prepping team for upcoming season
There’s a rumor going around that there’s a new offense in Mercedes.
Actually, it’s not a rumor. It’s true.
That’s what head football coach Roger Adame is saying as the Tigers prepare for their season opener at home Friday, Aug. 30 against Ednburg North.
“We are really excited about where we are at right now,” said Adame, in his sixth year directing the perennial playoff Tigers. “We had a really good summer and we have a lot of guys here.”
Adame said that the new UIL rule where coaches can work with athletes for two-hours once a week in sport-specific training was a big boost for the Tigers, especially putting a new offensive scheme in place.
“It’s day one and we are hitting the ground running,” he said on Monday. “We have a new offensive system in and we like the way that it’s going.”
No matter the offense, a hard-hitting defense is the name of the game in the orange and white Tiger town.
“Obviously, the defense has been stellar and it’s something we can hang our hat on and we are going to continue that,” Adame said. “There are a lot of guys who want to compete and who want to learn and who are coachable. As a coach, that’s what you want to see. Competition is great among players.”
Mercedes follows the Edinburg North game with a trip to McAllen to face McAllen Rowe (Sept. 5), followed by La Feria (Sept. 12) and Edinburg High at home (Sept. 20). Then the district starts with the rivalry game at Edcouch-Elsa (Sept. 27), at home vs. Sharyland Pioneer (Oct. 4), at Sharyland (Oct. 25), at Laredo Cigarroa (Nov. 2) and home vs. Roma (No. 8) for the final regular season game.
“The fire of a new season and all the buildup never changes,” Adame said. “You’re constantly inching closer to the things you’ve worked for since last season ended – and that’s this season.”
