Trevino noticed for 48 years of officiating

Jesus Trevino became a high school basketball official because he loved the game and it was a way to stay on the court.

When he started he didn’t know he would go on to officiate more than 2,000 games in his career.

“It wasn’t only Friday night games,” Trevino said. “It was all week when I started refereeing, and then I cut it down to the varsity games on Friday and tournaments on Saturday.”

During a city meeting held March Trevino was honored for all his hard work on the basketball court as an official by Texas State Representative Armando Martinez who awarded him with a proclamation and a Texas flag.

Mercedes Mayor Henry Hinojosa also congratulated Trevino in front of a full chamber and awarded him with a proclamation from the city.

Trevino recalled officiating a playoff game from the early 80s that was dubbed the “Super Bowl” between Harlingen High and PSJA High. The game featured future NFL Super Bowl winner Jonnie Jackson who played for the 49ners.

“It was an honor to be recognized in front of the people and by the state rep and the mayor,” Trevino said.

Trevino joined the Texas Association of Sports Officials Basketball Division in 1971.

He officiated many noteworthy games and served as TASO Basketball RGV Chapter president.
