Due to COVID-19 and for the safety of the community, the Mercedes War Memorial Memorial Day Ceremony scheduled for May 25, has been cancelled. The event has drawn 300 to 400 people annually since 2007 when the monument was built. The memorial lists the name of 78 soldiers from Mercedes who died in battle. Wood crosses of each of the soldiers who died in the Afghanistan War are also displayed during its events.
