Soon after city leaders announced its first case of COVID-19 in Mercedes the number of cases began to climb and has now reached 10, according to a release sent out by Mercedes City Manager Sergio Zavala.
The day before the city announced its sixth case, city leaders voted to mandate all citizens wear a mask while in the public.
The move is an effort to stop the spread of the highly contagious and easily transmitted COVID-19 virus.
Currently, Hidalgo County has 113 reported cases.
Because of the risk of the rapid spread of the virus, and the need to protect the most vulnerable members of the community, Mayor Henry Hinojosa issued the Emergency Executive Order which requires that all individuals anywhere in the City of Mercedes to stay home except for certain essential activities and work. All persons three (3) years and older MUST WEAR SOME FORM OF COVERING OVER THEIR NOSE AND MOUTH when entering into or inside of any building that is not their dwelling, in business parking lots, and when pumping gas. Examples of facial covering include items such as a homemade mask, scarf, bandana, or handkerchief.
