Special to the Enterprise
MERCEDES – Four Mercedes High School students will participate in the Academies @Home online educational program by Harvard Student Agencies. The MHS students will participate in the weekend program that will total 16 instruction hours in either business, business consultation, coding, pre-law, pre-med or politics. The courses are taught by Harvard University undergraduate students.
The MHS students who will participate in The Academies @Home program are: junior Natalie Acosta, sophomore Kelsey Cavazos, sophomore Xandria Rodriguez and freshman Genevieve Vallejo.
Diana Guevara, college and career readiness advisor for Career & Technology Education, said, “Not only will they get insight into a profession, they will be taught by some of the most accomplished students in the world, Harvard students.”
According to Superintendent Carolyn Mendiola, M.Ed., the academy will give the students valuable exposure to the professional and Ivy League world.
“They will gain insight and knowledge from perspectives outside of the normal high school classroom environment, and it will give them new ideas, goals and confidence,” Mendiola said. “I believe this opportunity will further motivate our students as they pursue their academic and career goals.”
The mission of The Academies by HSA is to provide ambitious high school students with in-depth knowledge of various career fields. HSA is the largest student-run company in the world, employing more than 500 undergraduates annually. To learn more about the program or HSA, visit HomeAcademies.com.
