Tigers defeat Mission Veterans
Austin Davila’s interception wins game
By RAUL GARCIA JR
With 20 seconds left on the game clock, the undefeated Mission Veterans were in scoring position, and only down by one point.
Mercedes Tigers Safety Austin Davila was in the zone; ready to destroy the offense with his speed and toughness.
While spying on the quarterback, Davila back peddled from the middle of the end zone and dashed to the left corner where the offense was collapsing. He watched the ball sail into the end zone and plucked it out of the air.
It was Davila’s second interceptions of the night. This time, with no time left on the clock it sealed the 21-20 victory for the Tigers.
Davila also blocked the extra point that would have tied the game late in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers (8-1, 6-1) win over Mission Veterans (5-3, 5-1) sparked a three way tie for first in the race for the District 16-5A Division II championship.
Mercedes, Mission Veterans, and Sharyland (6-2, 5-1) are tied for the best record in the District heading into the regular season’s last two games.
The Tigers enter into a bye week, and will face Sharyland Pioneer (5-3, 4-2) on the road Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
