MERCEDES — Jamarion Owens entered Mercedes High School with a plan.
One: to do good in class, and two: excel on the playing field to get noticed by a college football team he could join.
Recently, Owens signed his letter of intent to play football for the Iowa Wesleyan University Tigers. He celebrated the momentous occasion in front of his friends and with family at his side.
“It feels great,” Owens said. “Having everybody here supporting me throughout my football season and throughout my career here feels great. I’m ready to make them all proud.”
Owens will not only represent the University on the football field, but he will also represent the school in track and field.
Owens helped lead the Mercedes Tigers to a District 16-5A Division II Championship his senior year playing on the defensive line. He was a two year starter his junior and senior year.
“I got a call from one of the coaches from Iowa Wesleyan and they said they liked the way I played, my style and that they would really like for me to go play for them,” Owens said. “The school is really good and the coach and staff are ready for me to come in. I’m going to put the work in and get on the field and set my sights on playing in the NFL.”
