Lions Club to Host its Canal Fishing Contest

The Mercedes Lions Club will hold a Canal Fishing Contest from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on April 23, 2022, at the main canal from 10th to 17th Streets in Mercedes. Entry fee is $5.00 and there will be prizes awarded in each of the following categories: Heaviest fish, Longest fish, and Most Unusual fish. Registration for children and adults will begin at 7:00 a.m. on the day of the tournament. The contest is open to all. Children are encouraged to participate but must be accompanied by an adult. Sponsors for the Tournament are Boggus Ford, Texas National Bank, Oscar Rizo Paving, SWG Engineering, Barry Jones, Attorney-at-Law, Mid Valley Publishing, Rell Transport LLC, JPO Enterprises and Mercedes Dairy Queen.
At the conclusion of the fishing tournament there will be a Chupacabra Egg Race at the same location. Tickets for this event are $3.00 each or $5.00 for 2 and can be obtained at the fishing tournament or from any member of the Mercedes Lions Club.
The ticket with a number corresponding to the winning egg will win a gift certificate for a pair of Horse Power or Macie Bean boots. Other prizes are gift cards or certificates from H.E.B., Texas Roadhouse, Cortinos Restaurant, Blue Onion, Chilis, Smoking Oak, Whataburger, Angelic Touch, Fancy Nails and Advanced Barber College. There are also prizes of rounds of golf from Llano Grande Golf, a makeup kit from Casa de Reyna and socket, screwdriver and hex key sets from Bill Bunton Auto Supply.
