Physicians Graduate from Family Practice Residency Program in Mid-Valley
Six young doctors have become the third class to graduate from the UTRGV / Knapp Family Practice Residency Program in Mercedes.
The graduates are Dr. Andrea Ramirez, Dr. Ezinwaneamaka Morayo Ejiofor, Dr. Christian Cerna (Chief Resident), Dr. Jasmine Garcha, Dr. Carlos Parisi, and Dr. Yone Scaramelli.
These family medicine physician residents completed their clinical training at the UTRGV / Knapp Family Practice Residency Program, which includes a spacious clinic in Mercedes, along with hospital rotations at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.
Dr. Gerardo Muñoz Monaco serves as Program Director for the UTRGV / KNAPP Family Practice Residency Program, assisted by Dr. Carolina Gomez de Ziegler and faculty and staff of the UTRGV School of Medicine, as well as mentoring physicians at Knapp Medical Center and in the Mid-Valley community.
The residency program opened in 2017 in a new 13,800-square-foot clinic on the western edge of Mercedes, at 2810 W. Expressway 83, across the street from “Med High” and Science Academy. The program was established through a partnership between the UTRGV School of Medicine, Knapp Medical Center, the City of Mercedes, and the Knapp Community Care Foundation.
Physicians at the clinic see all ages of patients for a wide variety of conditions. In addition to being staffed by several board-certified family medicine physicians, the center also includes several specialists, including a sports medicine specialist (Dr. Evan Perez), urologist (Dr. James Sander), and a doctoral-level licensed professional counselor (Jennifer Ortega, DPC, LPC, CPC, CCATP).
The program boasts a total of 18 residents (six first-year residents, six second-year residents, and six third-year residents.)
The clinic — which features 18 exam rooms — accepts most insurance plans as well as Medicare and Medicaid.
