UTRGV WOMEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI WITH SECOND-STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team recorded their second-straight shutout to defeat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 1-0 as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union on Sunday at Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium.
UTRGV gained three points in the showdown standings and now leads 6 to 3.
Freshman Amy Hislop gave the Vaqueros (2-4) the lead in the 25th minute with her second goal of the season. Hislop dribbled and flipped the ball over the defender and delivered a shot from outside the box and over the outstretched hand of Islanders goalie Kennedy Stelling for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros defense made Hislop’s goal stand as they kept the Islanders (3-2) to just one shot on goal. Freshman Emma Lööv (2-2) stopped that attempt for her lone save of the match.
The Vaqueros outshot the Islanders 15 to 12 and 3 to 1 on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday, September 11, when they visit (RV) Texas at 1 p.m. at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field.
The next matchup in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is a volleyball match on September 6 in Corpus Christi.
