It’s not often the newspaper publisher and news staff are recognized or photographed at the city meeting. 

It’s usually the newspaper staff doing the picture taking. At last night’s city meeting, the City took time to recognize the Mercedes Enterprise with a proclamation for its efforts of covering the news and for winning seven journalism awards at the Texas Press Association Awards Luncheon held in July.

“We are very excited about the fact that our historical newspaper has received so much recognition from the Texas Press Association,” said Oscar Montoya, Mayor of Mercedes. “I’m excited that our hometown newspaper is receiving accolades statewide. I think it is very, very note worthy.”

Montoya continued, “Some of the highlights of the awards were of local sports and photography of the City of Mercedes publics works and American Legion Post. It helps us promote the city and the efforts of the J.A. Garcia to make sure they make their goal of  being the most patriotic post in the United States.”
