“Blinded by the Light”
By Rock n’ Roll James
So, two of my band members did something to me that totally took me by surprise. I found out they were looking for a singer to replace me in my own band and behind my back. The ad was pinned on a peg board at a local music store. I never expected it. I stood there shocked. The feeling of betrayal was deep and strong. Who the hell did these dudes think they were? Looking for a singer to replace me in MY BAND? I decided to keep it under wraps that I had found out and didn’t approach my bandmates about it. I spoke with them over the phone but did not mention anything.
Later, I get wind that they were actually about to audition a singer at the bass player’s apartment. Well, this is where I decide I’m going to make a surprise appearance at their rehearsal. I drive up to the bass player’s place, and I get off. His apartment was by Nolana Avenue in McAllen right behind Church’s Fried Chicken. I get off the car, go up to the door, and knock. Stony, the pass player, opens the door and is shocked to see me. Richard, the guitarist, was there preparing to rehearse and was clearly shocked to see me too. I asked them, “Hey, what’s up? You guys rehearsing or something?” They were kind of quiet, but then Stony fesses up and responds, “Yeah.” Richard never said a word. I continue to ask them, “You guys rehearsing without me?” Stony replies, “Yeah, we’re actually going to audition a singer.” Right at that moment, there is a knock at the door. Stony opens it, and the kid they are auditioning is at the door. His name was Joey, and he was a singer for a local band from Pharr, Texas called Outkast. The kid had some great pipes. His vocal ability was great.
After I finally had proof my band members were moving forward without me, the first thing I told them was that the name Blind Justice wouldn’t work for them and that it would be better for them to perform under a new band name. After all, the name Blind Justice was mine, and my face was connected with that name. I ended my conversation with them, wished them luck, and left. But, that wasn’t the end of Blind Justice. Tell you more next week.
