J.A Garcia Post 172 Fun Facts

Did you know The American Legion, J.A Garcia Post 172 of Mercedes was chartered in 1920. The Post was named after Jose Antonio Garcia who was the Only Killed in Action “KIA’’ from Mercedes in the Argonne Forrest, France on 11/01/1918. 

Dear Community, 

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our Comrade Juan Moya Sr.

 Comrade Moya previously served as various positions to include Post Commander. 

“Comrade Moya served 22 years in military as a Master Sergeant. He served during the 1962 Berlin Crisis. After his release from National Guard, he enlisted in the Army and earned his Airborne and Special Forces badge. He served with multiple Special Forces units, including two combat tours with the 5th Special Forces Group in the Republic of Vietnam in the Central Highlands. His last assignment was with a Special Operations Unit in the Tri-Border area of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. He also served a tour in Thailand and one in Germany with the 10th Special Forces Group, where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant and became a Team Sergeant for an elite 12-man team of Green Berets.”

Comrade Moya, has been actively serving in his community as the J.A. Garcia American Legion Post 172 Post Commander, 25 years as a JROTC instructor, and established a boxing gym. 

A church mass was held Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Comrade Moya was laid to rest September 13. 2023 at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home in LA Feria.
