Mercedes Superintendent Carolyn Mendiola accepted the Hidalgo County Friday Night Lights 1st Place trophy recently.

Mercedes ISD won first place in the mid sized District category.

The district participated in the county wide effort to increase the 2020 U.S. Census county response.

The competition included 15 school districts from across the county, featured a 13-week schedule where the districts face one team each week.

Historically, there has always been a census under count in the Rio Grande Valley.
