MEMORIES 21 – BLESSINGS 22

MEMORIES 21 – BLESSINGS 22

And so it came to pass the old man had departed on December 31 at12:00 a.m. A baby cried, awakened by the explosive sounds of firecrackers zooming toward tha skies, illuminating the night with spectacular colors; 2022 had arrived. Millions of people welcomed tha new year; it was a great moment for many. And even though there was so much happiness throughout tha world, nonetheless an umbrella of sadness was in existence. Although many look forward to a better morrow, others clung to a past, that is not so memorable.

At this point in time, I would like to wish everyone Peace, Wellness, and Happiness in the coming year. And before I forget, I’d like to send Best Wishes to my good friend Erica, who recently got married. YES SIREE ! Congratulations are in order; Un Abrazo and my true blessings to Mr. and Mrs. Hernandez. May Peace and Wellness accompany you in your new life.

My loyal readers, despite the deviled plagues’ threats on human life, I see many people who still continue to disregard the warnings to protect themselves from the horrific plague. I have heard of many who died; many who did not have to die. It has been said, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ A high school teacher once told me. ‘A word to the wise is sufficient’.

One of my many good friends called me from Dallas, to wish me peace and wellness, then he asked me how I had spent tha last day of 2021. And I told him, “Jerry, you ain’t going to believe me, but I spent a good part of that day visiting some friends and relatives, who are no longer with us. For whatever it’s worth I had to go and relieve some precious memories.

I went to visit my Grandparents, Nieves and Jacinto Dominguez, then I went to see my mother Celia and my stepdad Shon Cantu. After I stopped to see my good friend Gilberto Perez, I went to visit my brother Robert Hinds, but I could not find his grave. I also went to visit my mother-in-law, Maria Puertas, and my sister Betty Martell, and Compadre Ricky Palomo, they’re all in tha same cemetery in Weslaco. Then I took a trip over to La Feria, Texas to visit my Compadre Eloy Martinez and my brother Lenard Garcia. I shared some quality time with all of them and somehow I went back in time, if only for a little while.”

My good friend, Jerry, never once interrupted me and then he spoke, “You know something, DUKE, that is what I call some ‘real quality time’. We all need to do those type of home visits, regardless of the sadness it may bring us. Happy new year! DUKE, and keep on writing your great stories; one of them will soon become a movie; then you’ll get the tickets.”

 GOD Bless,

 DUKE MARTELL
