Ph. D Candidate Derek Xavier Garcia seeks oral history of Mercedes’ Colegio Jacinto Treviño

Dear Editor,

I am a doctoral researcher and oral historian studying the Colegio Jacinto Treviño, which was located in Mercedes between 1971-1974. The basis of our history has always been in the stories we share, rather than the papers that can be found in archives and museums. The Colegio is one of those examples where despite its impact, is not often discussed in the classroom.

That is why I am writing to you in the hopes of sharing this with the Mercedes community. The way we remember is just as important as the reasons why we do. For that reason, I am interested in speaking with people who remember and were involved with the school in any way: whether they were a student, teacher, child or sibling of a student, or even someone who lived nearby. I am interested in all memories.

The community’s stories and voices matter. If anyone would like to participate in my project by speaking to me, please contact derekxgarcia@gmail.com for more info.

Thank you and I look forward any responses,

Derek Xavier Garcia
