UDUNNA, ADAMS EARN WAC INDOOR TRACK & FIELD WEEKLY AWARDS
The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that sophomore Jedidiah Udunna and junior Zoë Adams, of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field program, have been named the WAC Men’s Field and WAC Women’s Track Athletes of the Week, respectively.
Udunna and Adams both opened the indoor season with a splash, turning in solid performances at the Arkansas Invitational – a meet the NCAA called a “return from the holidays” event to watch that featured some top competition.
Udunna won the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.59 meters, which ranks him No. 1 in the WAC and No. 15 in the country. His jump also broke a 29-year-old UTRGV indoor program record. He now owns both the indoor and outdoor long jump program records.
In her UTRGV debut, Adams finished sixth in a deep women’s 400-meter dash field and was 11th in the 200-meter dash. She ran 56.29 in the 400, which ranks her first in the WAC and sixth in program history. Adams’ time of 25.30 in the 200 is the eighth-best in the conference this season.
Adams also ran on the women’s 4×400-meter relay team, which finished 12th in 3:55.88, putting them at No. 3 on the WAC performance list.
These are the first indoor weekly awards for Udunna and Adams, and Udunna’s second weekly recognition by the WAC.
UTRGV will be back in action Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque.
