Resident reporter takes over as Enterprise editor

Mercedes resident Raul Garcia Jr., takes over as editor of the Mercedes Enterprise.

“I’m excited to be back reporting the city news full time,” Garcia said.

Garcia, 41, is an award winning journalist and holds a masters in new media journalism from Full Sail University. He began reporting as a student at the Univ. of  Texas at Brownsville in 1998 and later Michigan State University.

He recently was a sports reporter at the Monitor and for three years covered community news at the Valley Morning Star.

Garcia’s first stint with the century old weekly began as a contributing reporter in March 2007. He quickly moved up the ranks to managing editor and later interim editor in July 2008 through Oct. 2008.

Garcia  joins a short list of editors who have led the newspaper since it first printed in 1908.

“We are moving the paper to what it used to be before,” Enterprise manager C.A. Hinojosa said. “I feel Raul brings a lot to the table, and he’s well known.”
